This story begins around closing time at the
Round Table Pizza in Cameron Park CA, Halloween night, 1994. Delivery
Drivers Ernie Womack, Travis King, and Joe Petunis, were talking
about the same thing that they were always talking about: Music.
Although drummer Ernie, bassist Travis, and guitarist Joe had been
friends for quite some time, they had never played together. Now,
after saying for many months that they should get together some
night and jam, they finally decided to do it, and they resolved
to meet up at Travis' house after work. They closed the restaurant
for the night, and all went home to pick up their equipment. Even
though he was running late (as usual) Ernie stopped by Dennys to
pick up some dinner on his way. While he was waiting for his food,
a guy he knew named Jason Fralish, walked in and they got to talking.
Ernie and Jason had played acoustic guitars together a couple of
times, and Ernie knew that Jason had a great voice, but they had
never jammed together seriously. Well, to make a long story short,
as soon as the food was ready to go, Ernie and Jason walked out
together and both drove up to where the other two were waiting.
Jason, Ernie, Travis, and Joe jammed until about 5:00 in the morning
in Travis' living room, Playing cover songs like Am I Evil, Smells
Like Teen Spirit, and that Offspring "Keep 'Em Separated" song.
Everyone had a great time and they decided to do it again soon.
Jason mentioned before he left, that he worked with a guy named
Kelly who played guitar, and everybody decided that he should bring
him to the next jam. About three days later, all five guys got together
at Ernies house. Coincidentally as it turned out, Ernie and Kelly
knew each other from high school. After jamming for a few hours,
they decided that they all played together pretty well, and that
they should make this a regular thing. And after some discussion,
they all decided on a band name: DOWN.
About nine months later, They played their fist show as DOWN at
a local club called THE SOUNDWAVE in Rancho Cordova, CA. Then, about
nine months after that, just as things were starting to pick up,
and their name was starting to get around, Phil Anselmo from Pantera,
and Pepper Keenan from C.O.C. released an album under the name DOWN
(dicks). So, after playing as DOWN for the better half of a year,
Jason, Kelly, Ernie, Travis and Joe, had to come up with a new band
name. After about two months of considerations, the name: THOUSAND
YARD STARE was in place.
They played two shows as THOUSAND YARD STARE, both of which were
at a local club/music store called THE ATTIC, in Placerville. At
this point, the band decided to take a month or two, and write some
new material. During this "month or two" the band and Joe Petunis
went their separate ways. Now, the "month or two" for writing new
songs, became the "year or so" looking for a new guitarist to take
Joe's place. Although they looked for about a year, none of the
new guitarists that they jammed with seemed to fit like Joe had.
After some discussion, it was decided that instead of getting a
new guitarist, the band would re-write all of their songs to work
with only one guitar. Sometime during this period, Ernie was shopping
at a record store, and while browsing, came across a CD by a band
from Europe named (you guessed it) THOUSAND YARD STARE. A couple
of months, and several arguments later, the band settled on its
final name: BRAND X SAVIOR, which was also the title of one of their
earlier songs (the copyright package went in the mail about two
seconds later)!
About this time, Travis was getting ready to move to Humboldt for
college. Now the band faced the dilemma of finding a new bass player.
In the winter of 1996, Dan McCann, a long time friend of the band,
stepped in. Dan was a guitarist, but decided to join the band as
the bass player until they could find a permanent replacement for
Travis. Although Dan was in the band for over a year, BRAND X SAVIOR
never played a live show with him. During this time, the band was
spending all of their free time in the studio working on their first
EP (which once finished, was never released). By the time that their
EP was done (late 1996), the band had caught the "recording bug"
and headed straight back into the studio to begin working on a full-length
album. At the end of the first night back in the studio, Dan announced
that he was unhappy with the direction of the music, and He was
leaving to work on his own solo project. Although he would be around
to finish the recording of the tracks they had just laid down, this
would be the end of his time with the band. Jason, Kelly, and Ernie
continued to play together every chance they could, and never gave
up hope that they would find a suitable replacement.
In the early part of 1999, a friend in
one of his college courses introduced Jason to bassist Andy Rusanoff.
About two weeks later, Andy was welcomed into the band. Within two
months of having Andy in the band, BRAND X SAVIOR, along with 20
other local bands (including PAPA ROACH (DreamWorks) was chosen
to be on the 98 Rock annual compilation album "Sac Rocks" (volume
6, Beyond The Muzak).
This gave Andy about a month to learn all of
the bands songs and be ready to play live at the concerts to help
promote the 98 Rock album (he pulled it off better than anyone had
hoped!). In August of 1999, about a month after being selected to
appear on the 98 Rocks CD, Jason found out that his father was diagnosed
with terminal cancer. And although the band did play 2 shows, and
made an appearance on Local Licks (98 rock talk show which at the
time was hosted by Kylee Brooks) to help promote the album, Jason
had to take time out of the band to help with his family, and with
his father's condition. In June of 2000, his father passed away,
and in the following weeks, Jason put closure to his family's tragedy.
After a time of mourning, the band was soon back in full swing.
Since then, they have played shows at venues including CAFÉ PARIS,
CROSSROADS, THE BOARDWALK, BO JANGLES, ROAD HOUSE, and they
appeared on live T.V. on the ROSEVILLE CABLE CHANNEL 8 show: ROCK N' ROLL
LIFESTYLE and Local Access in Grass Valley through BOSS 7 PRODUCTIONS.
BRAND X SAVIOR is looking forward to many shows and further
promoting their passion.
Brand X Savior was selected to appear on Sac Rocks Vol. 8 - "A Family Tradition",
in the summer of 2001. This marked the second time the band had appeared on
the prestigious Northern California compilation. Brand X Savior continues
to show their unrelenting drive towards mainstream exposure by being
recognized as one of NorCals premier metal-hybrid bands.
In the late winter of 2002, Brand X Savior parted ways with Andy after he was
diagnosed with Carpel Tunnel in both hands which left him unable to play the bass.
As fate would have it, another bass playing "Travis" had emerged onto the scene
at that same time. Having played shows with Travis's band Blue Star Creeper,
Brand X Savior was quite familiar with his bass playing abilities and asked him
to join the band.
Brand X Savior was once again selected to appear on a variety of compilation
CD's in 2002. Brand X Savior appeared on Deafinit Records "Boy, I wish I was in
a Boy Band" compilation with their version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. BXS also
was once again selected to appear on 98 Rock's local music CD: "Sac Rocks Vol. 9 - Who's
Next" with their song "Broken", as well as Sac Rocks Vol. 10 - A Decade to Remember with the classic
version of Big Brother. Finally, Brand X Savior was selected to appear on Pus Cavern's
Christmas compilation:"Elves Built My Hotrod". The band's contribution was their
version of "Let it Snow".
Throughout the band's ten years of members coming and going, name
changes, and family crisis', BRAND X SAVIOR has evolved into one
hell of an original, musically diverse, emotionally charged, powerhouse
of a band. And they have proven to themselves, as well as their
many fans, that BRAND X SAVIOR can, and will endure throughout anything
that comes their way. BRAND X SAVIOR is finally nearing completion of
an album that began in early 1997; it is slated for official release in
mid/late 2006. They can also be found playing at various venues in
Sacramento and the surrounding area.
